Meals (Selhurst)

At Selhurst Village Nursery, mealtimes are about much more than food; they are opportunities for children to learn, grow, and connect.

All of our meals are freshly prepared on site by our qualified nursery cook, using ingredients delivered weekly from trusted local supermarkets. We never add salt or sugar to our dishes, and we ensure that every meal is healthy, balanced, and appealing to little taste buds. Children enjoy breakfast, lunch, tea and healthy snacks (including fresh fruit and vegetables) throughout the day. We happily cater for all dietary needs, including halal, vegetarian, pescatarian and individual allergies or intolerances. Meals for babies are carefully puréed, and parents are always welcome to come in and breastfeed at any time.

Mealtimes are a shared, social experience. Whether in the baby room or toddler room, children sit together at the table. Staff join them at the table, eating the same food to model good manners, encourage conversation, and make mealtimes enjoyable and safe. We find that this helps children develop their language, social skills and confidence.

We also encourage independence: children help set the table with plates, cutlery, and cups and are supported to pour their own water. Self-serving promotes confidence and fine motor skills, while also helping them make healthy choices.

By creating a calm, supportive environment at the table, we ensure every child has a positive relationship with food, builds lifelong healthy eating habits, and feels part of a nurturing community.
